LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® helps children and adolescents develop their reading abilities

The leadership team from the Danish organization Læs for Livet (Read for Your Life in English) joined one of our facilitator trainings in the LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® methodology in 2018. In this article, we have talked to the consultants at Read for Your Life about how they use LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® in their work today.

“Læs for Livet” is Danish for Read for Your Life. They are a non-profit organization that uses books as a way to facilitate social change and give at-risk children and adolescents good experiences and a potential for better lives.

Read for your life have used the LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® method to continuously improve and develop their work in various ways. They have used the method internally and at a conference on reading, but their primary focus so far has been to empower some of the very important people in the lives of the young and vulnerable children and adolescents they work with.

In several workshops, Read for Your Life has worked with family therapists, foster parents, foster consultants and social workers. The focus of these workshops has been to analyze, reflect on and learn from their daily work and experiences with these young people. The outcome of these analysis and reflections have enabled Read for Your Life to strengthen the support for the children and adolescents in their desire to read. It has, furthermore, paved the way for new and better ways of supporting the children and adolescents in their everyday life.

We can engage and create commitment effectively through LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY®

Read for Your Life has always used creative methods for facilitation and communication. for that reason, the LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® methodology was a perfect fit to ensure engagement, involvement and to bridge gaps in their participants different ways of working. Through the use of LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® the consultants are able to engage everyone involved regardless of their academical level or preferences, just as it enables the facilitators to make sure that everyone involved is both engaged and committed to the process.

We asked the consultants at Read for Your Life if they plan on continuing the use of the method in the future. To that question, the answer was: YES! They even plan on extending the use of the method to also include the children and adolescents in some of the workshops. They expect that this involvement will enable them to support the young people even further in their development and desire to read.

They believe that LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® is just the right tool to use in this case, because the young people and the professionals are able to communicate and interact on an equal level in a respectful manner, regardless of their age, role, reading level, etc.
